Report: 5G Mobile subscriptions in India to reach 700 million mark by 2028

A recent report by Ericsson has projected that 5G mobile subscriptions in India will surge to approximately 700 million by the end of 2028, accounting for around 57 percent of total mobile subscriptions in the country. The report highlights the rapid growth of 5G technology in India, with confirmed subscriptions reaching about 10 million by the end of 2022.

According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, the average data traffic per smartphone is expected to increase from 26GB per month in 2022 to around 62GB per month in 2028. This significant growth in data consumption reflects the increasing reliance on mobile devices for various activities such as streaming, gaming, and digital communication.

In terms of smartphone subscriptions, the report forecasts a rise from 76 percent of total mobile subscriptions in 2022 to 93 percent by 2028. This indicates a shift towards higher smartphone adoption rates and a greater reliance on mobile connectivity in India.

On the other hand, the report suggests that 4G subscriptions will experience a decline from 820 million in 2022 to 500 million by 2028. This decline can be attributed to the growing adoption of 5G technology, which offers faster speeds and more advanced capabilities.

Nitin Bansal, Head of Ericsson India and Head of Network Solutions for Southeast Asia, Oceania, and India, emphasized the role of mobile networks in promoting social and economic inclusion in India. He stated, “The strong digital infrastructure being established in India will help the country bridge the digital divide, create jobs, drive entrepreneurship, and boost the economy.”

The report also projects a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of five percent in smartphone subscriptions, reaching over 1.14 billion by 2028. This demonstrates the ongoing expansion of smartphone usage and its increasing significance in the Indian market.

Furthermore, total mobile data traffic in India is estimated to grow from 18 exabytes (EB) per month in 2022 to 58 EB per month in 2028, reflecting a CAGR of 22 percent. This surge in data consumption underlines the need for robust and scalable network infrastructure to meet the growing demands of users across the country.
